Title: Need some help fellas
Description: stupid virus

ok I'm busy as hell since I'm working on closing a house within the next month so gotta be quick.

Jenn or my bro one got on my comp and installed some damn plugin they thought they needed to view something which of course ended up being a virus. I have no idea which one it is, probably a trojan since its working the hell out of my processor.

anyways what I'm getting are 3 icons on the left, each saying like "error remover" "system restorer" or something I can't remember off the top of my head. Also it usually tries to open a page as my background with a biohazard type symbol on it bleeding or whatnot. Also then it'll have the random messages pop up "warning your system is under attack you need to download whatever"

I ran a virus scan this morning finally (was taking forever thanks to the processor overworking) and it got rid of some junk but I dont think it knocked this one out. I'll take some screenshots of the issues when I get home and add them up. In the meantime though any ideas? trying to save a reformat at least till I move some things off the drive. But I'm about due for one anyways

Sounds like your PC is going to need a real doctor. I suggest taking it to a specialist.

Cybergig1 - October 26, 2007 03:01 PM (GMT)
haha hell no I'll rip out the harddrive first, cheaper :\ lol

I mean I've gotten rid of worse, I just am not sure of the name of this one so I can hunt down a fix

Hassun - October 26, 2007 03:04 PM (GMT)
Well, in that case. We'll need to go looking for the name and the properties of this creature.

Cybergig1 - October 26, 2007 04:37 PM (GMT)
yeah I'll get that screen shot for you guys hopefully after work, should help a lot, I know I caught it adding a toolbar onto IE (which I use firefox) but it was called the "NSS FRCH" bar or something weird

Don't forget to run everything through a search engine.

Oh and treat your bro and/or Jenn to a curb stomp buffet. :v

Have you checked add/remove programs? do you have a program called WinAntiVirus on there now? this sounds kinda similar as to what I've seen out at my clients. if you do have win anti, uninstall it. This gets rid of HALF of it.

Do yourself a favor, it's likely a virus, but grab Spybot Seek and Destroy and run a scan. You might have something called Virtumonde, a hellish BITCH to get cleared off your system. If you have WinAntiVirus, this'll get rid of the rest of it.

if you do find Virtumonde on there, spybot will attempt and fail to get rid of it (no matter what it says). So download VundoFix (http://www.atribune.org/content/view/24/2/) which has a 70-80% chance of truly getting rid of the problem, Vundo constantly changes and WinAntiVirus and other faux virus scanners are installed as a part of it.

if the problem persists download HiJack This (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php#hijackthis) and do a scan, post the log here.

If you want the ultimate spyware busting package I recommend getting Hitman Pro.

thanks raven I'm going to try those real quick, and no I actually dont have winantivirus so at least we knocked that one off the list haha :)

another thing to try is to boot into safe mode and run a antivirus program and other programs like hijack this.
I did that to get rid of a virus that kept reproducing it's self, even after spybot got rid of it in normal mode.
you should also remove everything from your temp folders in Windows directory as well as temp files in your user directories.

A good thing to do is to get an image of your boot drive when it is in a good condition (I use Norton Ghost). That way if this happens again all you need to do is recover the boot drive and all your problems are gone.

Cybergig1 - October 29, 2007 03:58 PM (GMT)
yeah I been looking into getting Norton Ghost for awhile actually

anyways so one problem after another. I managed to get my files off so just wanted to go ahead and reformat. Got that setup, nice new version everything running fine and now for WHATEVER ungodly reason I can't get on the net, literally does not get a connection. Like under my network settings it does not even show "my local connection" or whatever. It just has the 2 firewire ports :\ I mean wtf man thats never happened.

so yeah any ideas welcome. And trying to setup a connection with the connection wizard does -not- work I have no friggin idea whats up with it. As it had no problem getting on the net just 1 hour before I did the reformat. The other computers are still on it fine. And I even did a 2nd format since I thought maybe the installation of windows had glitched :| normally wouldn't bother me but with this whole house closing and stuff going on I'm ready to jump off a building, I just so dont have the time

Did you install the drivers for your network card? if you did try uninstalling, reboot and reinstall it. does the device manager show your network card?

Cybergig1 - October 29, 2007 04:21 PM (GMT)
I need to double check but thing is I'm using the onboard one thats built onto the motherboard, its enabled in the bios, I even tried disabling it, booting up then reenabling it to make sure. The router picks up like it knows its connected, and the lights next to the connection on the board fire up when I plug it in :\ but something definitely isn't jiving

sedka - October 29, 2007 04:35 PM (GMT)
The lights doesn't tell much, except that it's plugged. Try installing the driver for the network card. My cousin has an store bought computer with on board network card. After I reinstalled the computer, it still needed the drivers.

But check the device manager under control panel->systems->hardware->device manager. See if it shows the on board network card and if it has a "?" on it.

will do, I'll be home in about 5 hours or so. I did go ahead and find the drivers on Asus' website and sent it to Dave's comp so I'll put them on a disc and install that as well. I'm with you in thinking its just not -really- recognizing it. My brain is just hammered with too much going on to being dealing with yet another thing haha X_X thanks for helping come up with lots of things to check bro I appreciate it
