That's the article, this is the video/audio of the 911 tape:

http://break.com/index/brave-neighbor-kill...-911-call2.html

Basically, 2 men were robbing a neighbor's house when Joe Horn saw them. He called 911 and stayed on the phone as he saw them breaking and entering. When they got out of the house, he went outside with his shotgun and took care of business himself since the police took forever to get there.

Should Joe be charged? Is he a hero or a vigilante?

Personally, while I don't think you should be able to defend past your own property, I cheer in Joe's defense. I don't think he should be charged, and I'd be glad if my neighbor would do the same for me.

I guess guns are (sometimes) a necessary thing to have around the lair. However I still believe....

I think he might have crossed a fine line here. Or at the very least, he's pushing it. If he had been defending his own property I'd be completely in his corner. Defending someone else's property violently is pushing it a bit, though ultimately I root for him as well. After all, he was trying to do the right thing and it just got out of hand from what I've read.

Oh, I totally <3 the Punisher. Which is why I kind of feel for this guy.

He should be charged for killing the burglars.
Judging by the transcript of the telephone call he clearly knew what to do and what not to do. It does not give you the right to act as judge, jury and executioner.
